Anti-mining protests resume in Peru, demonstrators fear harm to water supplies
CAJAMARCA, Peru — Demonstrators in Peru have resumed protests against plans to develop a $4.8 billion gold mine.
About 2,000 Peruvians joined the protest march in northern Cajamarca state. The protesters say they fear the Conga gold-and-silver mine will taint their water and affect a major aquifer.
The mine is majority owned by U.S.-based Newmont Mining Corp.
